For over a decade, I have been a professional photographer in my favorite medium of traditional film. While digital cameras are wonderful tools that I use often, they still can’t capture people and light with the same magic of old fashioned film.

While I can see in my work how film imparts an unmatched warmth and timelessness, I know that the roots of my love for the medium all go back to my family. I grew up in a family of amateur and professional artists and musicians, and my grandfather was a passionate Leica camera collector, so discussions about cameras were a routine topic around the house and at every holiday meal. I still use some of his cameras today.

Photography became an avocation at a young age and after earning my Arts degree from George Mason University, I began my professional career in Washington D.C. in 2010. Today I photograph family portraits, as well as commercial work for small creative businesses.

When I’m not attached to my favorite camera, a 1960 Rolleiflex (whose signature square images predate Instagram by a good five decades), I’m spending time with my husband and two young boys or I’m out in my garden (a newly realized hobby). As a family we also enjoy attending classic car events up and down the East Coast and spending time at the beach, particularly Nantucket Island.

 THE PHILOSOPHY behind the photos

Sophistication. My photography is classic, free from trends, with a timeless quality that you will look back on years from now and enjoy.

Authenticity. I’m always looking to capture those natural moments of interaction — new parents catching the eye of their newborn or a husband looking lovingly at his wife — that will make keepsake images for future generations.

Family Heritage. While getting the kids cleaned and dressed for a photo shoot can sometimes, in the moment, feel like more hassle than it’s worth (believe me, I know the feeling) I treat these sessions as something important, because I want to create images that will be meaningful not only to you but to future generations as well.

Patience & Warmth. Not everyone likes having their picture taken. Being sensitive to this and approaching each session with patience and warmth is an essential aspect of what I do. I will work to put everyone at ease in front of the camera so that I can get an honest recording of your family and your interactions, and you can actually enjoy our time together.

Why Film? Film creates warm, timeless images with a touch of nostalgia. When you see film and digital images side by side, there ultimately is no comparison. I find that shooting with film helps me be a better photographer by creating space to connect with you, instead of being distracted by the back of my camera.

“Her knack for capturing the little candid moments gives her photos an intimate and authentic quality.”
